I watched this documentary with a Mexican-American friend who had a unique childhood experience. She was in the US and in Texas for the first time. On the playground, a white girl shoved her toward a Black girl and yelled, “She’s not white!” The Black girl pushed her back and said, “Well, she’s not Black!” At the time, she did not know enough English to respond to both girls, but she knew both statements were accurate. This documentary too tries to create a third path and find space outside of the Black-white paradigm.

The documentary starts by detailing discrimination against Mexican Americans before the Civil Rights Movement. In Texas, they were forced to sit in the back of theaters and many restaurants would not serve them. The point of this case was to challenge how Mexican Americans were not allowed on juries. The case involved an intraracial murder and I’m surprised another test case wasn’t chosen. (This is similar to how the Miranda of Miranda rights was no saint.)

On the one hand, Mexican Americans were deemed white de jure, but treated as less-than-white de facto. A legal team came up with the idea that they were “a class apart” (thus the title of the work). It argued that they couldn’t be deemed equal if they were treated as not the equals to whites. Even though the close time frame was quite close to “Brown v. Bd. of Education,” this legal team was diligent to distance themselves from African Americans, so said the narrator. At no point did the legal team argue that they were of indigenous descent or that they were people of color. The work even says most Supreme Court justices did not really know that Mexican Americans existed. One Justice referred to the group by an epithet and didn’t know he was doing it. (The documentary doesn’t mention how many Justices knew nothing about the target group in “Bowers v. Hardwick” thirty years later.)

The interviewees were diverse in terms of gender. I got the sense that every interviewee was Latino, but some could have been Caucasian. The work spoke about the lead attorney Gilberto Garcia being handsome, brilliant, but alcoholic. I like that they showed a leader as being a complex figure; they didn’t sugar-coat the facts to make viewers feel at ease. I don’t recall hearing of this case in law school and I wonder if this work may be the catalyst for covering this case as much as a “Brown” or a “Korematsu.”

The documentary liner notes said it was an hour long, but it was more like 50 minutes. I swear Edward James Olmos was the narrator, but I didn’t see his name anywhere in the credits. This important documentary would have had a wider audience if it had Spanish language subtitles as an option.

This intelligent, fascinating piece of investigative journalism is a compelling account of how racism re: Latinos totally permeated Texas society in the 1950s. Why and how an ordinary murder case precipitates a challenge to conventional jury selection, and gets all the way to the US Supreme Court is an amazing story, and must be seen…

Naruto Shippuden is a little different from the early Naruto years. But it is high octane adrenaline! The action and story line arc takes up to 30 episodes before Sai comes into the picture. The only dissappointment I feel is in Viz Media, why are they bothering to release Shippuden 1 disc (4 episodes) at a time? They should go directly to box sets! And by box sets I mean, they should carry at least 20 episodes or more. Shipuden season 1 is like 50 or more episodes, each season is huge! Viz Media, why must you milk us of our hard earned money and give us so little in return?! Anyone who buys this disc or the previous disc in this series, I suggest you hold off watching them until you have disc 10 in hand, these episodes catch you and never let you go, you will writhe in agony until the next release!

These episodes will get to show us how much the other Konoha 11 have grown since Naruto has been away from his friends and teachers, as you see Naruto reuniting with his friends and finding out what has been happening Gara finds himself locked in battle with one of the elusive Akatsuki who have been sent to the hidden sand village to capture him. AS soon as Naruto finds out he of course rushes to aid his friend and fellow jinchuriki(A Person who has a sealed tailed demon in him/her)as he journeys to the sand village with Kakashi, Sakura, and Temari what is happening to Gara ignites his own anger as he knows the Akatsuki only see him and the other jinchuriki as nothing more than monster vessels to use in their insidious scheme. The series is still very entertaining and follows the manga series almost perfectly there are of course a few minor differences but nothing to big to worry about. I do hope that they’ll release uncut box sets like they did with Naruto but I guess will just have to wait an see. So for all fans rejoice again as the Shippuden episodes have finally arrived for us all to enjoy…

Despite the diminutive information (and none on Amazon) online, it would only develop sense for the skipped two-part Riolu special to be included on this third and final box dwelling for the Pokémon DP Battle Dimension season. Not only does it execute out the season with the remaining 16 episodes, the second disc (volume 6) includes the illusive “Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu” (totaling 18), and this time correctly mentions Hunter J on the assist of the box dwelling (unlike Vol. 2) . This is undoubtedly the best episode on the entire box area and worth mentioning that this is where you will gather it!

Also included are the remaining three Pokémon Summer academy episodes that were first effected by my cross VCR (spy my review of Battle Dimension Vol. 2), and despite the available online subs, I composed wanted the dubbed version! The budding friendship between Ash and Angie (which later continues in “If the Scarf Fits…”) makes up some of this collection’s best moments, along with an concept between Ash’s newly-evolved Grotle and Paul’s Torterra (”Aiding the Enemy”), and Ash’s battle with Barry, a blindly valid fan of Paul’s (”Barry’s Busting Out All Over!”) . Again, when did the dub gather estimable?!

Okay, there are a few clunkers toward the extinguish like “A Lean Mean Team Rocket Machine” and the poorly-dubbed “Sleepless in Pre-Battle” (Crescelia vs. Darkrai [if you want to witness Darkrai in the animé, accept the movie "The Rise of Darkrai"!]), but overall, it is absolutely worth owning.

REGARDING BOTH BOX SETS 2 and 3:

After being a Pokemon fan for so many years, DP Battle Dimension (season 11) was by far the best overall season yet. Our hero Ash’s devotion and passion to protect Pokemon shines brighter than ever opposite his heartless rival Paul and cruel Pokemon hunter J…

these box sets worth every penny, in dreary English.

Steve McQueen was known for many things– action films, snappy cars, motorcycles, a charismatic presence (on hide and off), and his proper “tough guy” persona. But with this film, another description moves to the top of that list: Actor. Anyone who doubts what a grand actor McQueen was need only peek this film, because his performance here as Jake Holman is simply as righteous as it gets. “The Sand Pebbles, ” directed by Robert Wise, is the sage of Holman, a sailor assigned to the U.S. Gunboat, “San Pablo,” stationed on the Yangtze River in China in 1926 (the sailors aboard are known as “sand pebbles”) . It’s vital function is to patrol the river and thereby keep an American presence in China, a country currently experiencing a period of political unrest and impending upheaval. It’s a modern assignment for Holman, and it suits him objective fine; his job is to support the ship’s engines up and running, and because of the size of the ship, he’s the only engineer– it’s fair Jake and his engine. And that’s the procedure he likes it. Holman is a loner by nature, and something of an iconoclast. At one point, when he is asked his thought of American Foreign Policy and their presence in China, he simply says, “I don’t mess with it. It’s all look-see-pidgin, somethin’ for the officers.”

Eventually, however, Holman is nevertheless drawn into the conflict through a series of events that impact him beyond all personal resistance, the most critical being when American lives are threatened throughout China, and Holman and a landing party are sent ashore to protect and escort some missionaries assist to the safety of the San Pablo. But at the mission, Holman discovers a plot of life, the likes of which he’s never known, and for the first time ever, he realizes a sense of belonging. And he likes it. For Holman, however, it may be too late; the political turmoil throughout the country has build the lives of everyone at the mission in pain, including a young missionary named Shirley Eckert (Candice Bergen), with whom Holman has made a connection he simply cannot dispel; for in Shirley, he discerns an innocence and a goodness that compels him, and in which he finds a welcome sense of fulfillment. So what began as a routine mission becomes a salient point in Holman’s life, and he is faced with the most distinguished decision he’s ever had to obtain.

This is the one for which McQueen should have won an Oscar. As Holman, he demonstrates an emotional range and depth that runs the gamut from almost boyish naivete to a world weary musty of life who has seen and heard it all. Utterly convincing, he can say more with a tiny incline of his head, a stupid blink or shifting of his eyes than most actors could say with reams of dialogue at their disposal. He communicates with so grand more than words, and there’s meaning in everything he says and does– he never wastes a line or a single moment. What he does with this role is magnificent; it’s the definitive McQueen performance. His Holman is the personification of the loner, and in creating him he delivers something few actors could ever equal: He’s tough, convincing and charming– all at the same time. And he should’ve taken home The Statue for it.

As Collins, the Captain of the San Pablo, Richard Crenna gives one of his finest performances, as well, and it cemented his transition from television actor to a career on the ample camouflage. After this, there was no going befriend. His portrayal of the somber, introspective Captain is riveting, and in him you readily ogle Collins’ sense of duty and honor, as well as his overwhelming sense of futility and failure. And the urgency with which he grasps his chance for redemption, even in the face of insurmountable odds, is entirely believable as it is consistent with the character he has created.

The superlative supporting cast includes Richard Attenborough (Frenchy), Emmanuelle Arsan (Maily), Mako (Po-han), Larry Gates (Jameson), Charles Robinson (Bordelles), Simon Oakland (Stawski), Ford Rainey (Harris), Joe Turkel (Bronson) and Gavin MacLeod (Crosley) . A noteworthy drama, extremely well crafted and presented by Wise, “The Sand Pebbles” is a expansive and memorable film that will forever stand as the pinnacle of McQueen’s successful career. Jake Holman is a character you will never forget, because there is something of him– that wistful longing to belong, perhaps– in all of us. A timeless classic among classics, this is one of the greatest motion pictures of all time, and is by definition, the magic of the movies.

This 1966 film is a substantial budget adaptation of the 1962 recent by Richard McKenna. Directed by Robert Wise, it gleaned nine academy award nominations. I remember reading the book a very long time ago, and remember it as an adventure memoir. But by watching this DVD, I peek now that it is distinguished more. And I also spy how it relates to what is happening in the world today.

The setting is China in 1926. Violent conflicts were everywhere. Warlords were fighting each other, and the Nationalist leader Chang Kai-Shek was gaining power. In addition, the Communists were fighting against the Nationalists. Because the U.S. had interests there, they had a few Navy gunboats going up and down the river. They weren’t supposed to do anything – impartial be a expose a force. But the Chinese, from all the different factions, wanted the Americans out. “Go Home Foreigners” was their battle wail. The Americans knew that at any moment an international incident could erupt. Sound familiar?

Steve McQueen, in the best performance of his career, is cast as a Navy machinist on the gunboat, which was nicknamed the “Sand Pebbles”. When he joins the crew, he’s surprised to witness that the “Coolies” do all the hard work – everything from cooking to cutting hair to running the engine. He opposes this as he wants to urge the engine himself, and after some conflict, and an accidental death, he befriends one of the Coolies, and teaches him how to rush the boat. Later, there are violent consequences.

There is tension throughout between McQueen and the crew for many reasons. And we soon know who the trustworthy guys and the poor guys are. Richard Attenborough plays a superior guy. He falls in care for with a young Chinese woman in bondage to the local house of pleasure. Another honorable guy is the Captain of the ship, played by Richard Crenna. He believes in ideals and is certain to act with valor even though he has to earn some hard choices. Steve McQueen is the ultimate great guy though. He acts on instinct and every fade is from the heart.

Then there’s the crew who treat the Coolies badly and fight against every improvement that McQueen wants to implement. They also are willing to almost cause a mutiny when an incident occurs in which the Chinese call for McQueen’s blood. We also inspect the naivety of the missionaries, one of whom is Candice Bergen, who assume that by declaring themselves “stateless persons” the Chinese will not inspect them as Americans. The film is a series of battles. Some of the battles are with guns. Others are proper ones. Together they accomplish a mammoth mosaic of high adventure coupled with questions of intervention. There are no easy answers.

The DVD has several features by Robert Wise in which he discusses the making of the film. However, to my disappointment, they are all in audio only. We hear his exclaim superimposed over a static scene or the logo from the film. After all the high adventure of the film, I was bored by these and didn’t seek them.

However, the film stands alone on its possess. It’s almost three hours long, but yet every moment is action packed with complex interweaving stories. There isn’t one listless fragment and all of the acting is gigantic. I loved it. I therefore give it an extremely high recommendation. Not to be missed.

This season, we contemplate that Julia’s baby is Sean’s, and that it has Ectrodactyly (lobster claw syndrome) . Surgeries include Sean doing a way on a Treacher/Collins syndrome patient (severe facial deformity), Dawn Sail is “earjacked” (her ear sliced off by an earring thief) a burn reconstruction on Escobar (he’s relieve!), and a breast reconstruction on a woman (Escobar’s wife) who’s had her breasts brutally reduce off.

Guest stars include Brooke shields as Faith Wolper (Christian’s therapist), Larry Hagman and Sanaa Lathan as Burt and Michelle Landau, Peter Dinklage as Marlowe Sawyer, Rosie O’Donnell as Dawn Scamper, Jacqueline Bisset as James LeBeau, Alanis Morissette as Poppy (Liz’s girlfriend), plus the stellar, incredible, and sexy Catherine Deneuve as Diana Lubey.

Some of the plotlines this season include Liz (the extraordinary Roma Maffia) getting a kidney stolen (a la urban memoir), the dog and the peanut butter, Matt joins Scientology, Sean has an affair with a potential nanny, Christian gets interested with Michelle, James (a woman) LeBeau has a risky own over Michelle – running an organ theft ring, Christian battles with his gain sexuality after his therapist hints that he might be ecstatic, Liz’s remaining kidney fails and she has to go on dialysis, Kimber seduces Matt to revenge Christian, Julia sleeps with Marlowe, Merrill Bobbitt returns, Wilber (Christian’s “son”) returns.

My accepted is the return of Escobar (Robert LaSardo) . Escobar is so unpleasant he’s beneficial, and he makes for a few broad episodes. This time he’s not unprejudiced masking as Sean’s conscience, he’s really befriend.

The soundtrack is again amazing (buy up the CD of the soundtrack to Season One), using music to complement the scenes, such as playing Don McLean’s ‘Starry Starry Night’ (a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh) during the ear replacement surgery.

The season finale was incredible, with major resolutions and some very colossal questions left for Season Five. The fault with this season is that once again there wasn’t enough surgery scenes. Unlike Season’s One and Two which focused on more surgeries, Season’s Three and Four focus more on the daily lives of Sean and Christian, and have more personal trauma in them than surgery trauma. I’d like to discover them go wait on to the primitive formula of more surgery issues. Since Troy/McNamara has made some major changes this year, I’m wondering how many more of the absorbing pro-bono reconstructive cases we’ll be seeing in the future. Overall, Season Four is as advantageous as Season Three but level-headed doesn’t measure up to One and Two. Delight In!

You know a season is completely nuts when one of the most sane position points is about an Organ Harvesting Ring!! This present is SO deliriously over the top…I fair had a blast. Watching it, my wife and I often found ourselves fair looking at each other and shaking our heads in disbelief. Can you imagine that if people in “genuine life” had to endure what Sean, Christian and company had to endure, they’d have long since died of strokes or heart attacks or unbiased boring stress!

The prove makes the machinations in everything from DALLAS to DYNASTY to SIX FEET UNDER view like perfectly normal, even tiring, occurences.

I admire this point to because it not only doesn’t panic being harmful, it THRIVES on it. Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon have the perfect blend of well-rooted and skillful acting, with honest a sprint of over-the-top over-acting. Not for one puny is the demonstrate “believable,” but it draws us in nonetheless, thanks in sizable portion to the skill of the two main actors. They are a joy to discover, both as characters and performers. I particulary like Christian Troy. Never more than in this season have we seen his blend of totally self-serving boorishness (and cruelty) peppered with accurate, impartial feelings. He has a novel savor in this season, and theirs is a complicated relationship that you root for…even though you know it probably won’t go well.

Meanwhile, Sean McNamara and his wife Julie are expecting a child, whom they glance has a very rare birth defect, and they must grapple with the preparations for that, and then the aftermath of the birth. This is actually fairly touching and when itsy-bitsy Connor arrives, we truly feel for a darling petite baby saddled with such a irascible defect. But in suitable NIP/TUCK execute, into this fairly credible development comes a nanny in the construct of a “miniature person” (Peter Dinklage, who is always very capable) with an agenda. Leave it to NIP/TUCK!!!

So, it’s mostly pleasant. The camoes this year were particularly luscious, from a silly Larry Hagman, to an rank Jacqueline Bisset to a hilarious Rosie O’Donnell (whom I usually Detest…but I have to give her props here for a droll and touching and bawdy performance) . Alannis Morrisette was okay in her role as a unique adore for Liz (the amazing Roma Maffia.)

But I continue to absolutely Abhor both the character of Matt McNamara and the actor who plays him. He’s totally unlikeable and I have composed needs to be in prison for the hit and rush he got away with years ago. But John Hensley, who plays him, continues to irritate most terribly. He’s not a noble actor, and frankly, he’s almost impossible to perceive at. I mild wonder who conception to cast this guy!! Nearly as annoying is Joely Richardson, a edifying actress whose character is unbiased so terribly unlikeable. But Christian Troy is an unlikeable character that viewers admire. Julia is an unlikeable character that viewers fair don’t like.

But overall, the exhibit is gigantic!!! I appreciate every episode (even the peculiar “futuristic” expose space in 2026), and gladly exercise my time with McNamara/Troy. The main reason the present gets only 4 stars is that Matt McNamara/John Hensley causes me to tumble an entire star.

If you’ve never seen the point to before…by all means do. But you must commence with Season One. It’s well worth the exertion to peer them all!!

This early film of Jackie Chan’s was meant to shepherd him into the ’70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Indirectly it did, but probably more out of positioning than performance. Chan was to assume Lee’s position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky chop-socky sequl to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan had worked as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese-occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation. Chan of course is no Bruce Lee (although during one dramatic sequnce, a still of Lee is cut into the frame to “remind” viewers of the filmmakers’ intentions) but New Fist of Fury marks Chan’s first entry as a leading actor in Hong Kong action films. –Shannon Gee
